The Barn was originally on three floors as can be seen from the positioning of the windows; during renovation, when the old floors were being replaced, it was decided not to re-instate the top floor, allowing better views of the roof timbers.

It was clear from the restoration the barn had been used for various purposes over the centuries, but it is likely that the west end had been occupied because of the large fireplace and chimney, supplemented later by a further fireplace on the southern wall which is old but not original.

In the grounds, many features were added, including the Italian garden, the stream through the woodland area, the cascade and the bowls pavilion, putting green and (pre-motorway) four hard tennis courts. The wall to the old kitchen garden was retained in its entirety, providing the main horticultural feature.
